Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for work to lay pavers
   • Access, interpret and apply paver laying documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage and barrier requirements
   • Select and check for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
   • Identify and survey area and location of paving from job drawings
   • Calculate paving requirements and select material to meet required finish of surface and pattern
   • Stockpile materials safely and within proximity to the work area
2. Prepare to lay paving
   • Set out location and shape of paving area to dimensions from job drawings
   • Carry out excavation to specified depth, allowing for base and thickness of unit
   • Position drainage pipes in sub-soil to local regulations
   • Prepare sub-soil and footing in accordance with specifications
   • Select base material in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications for identified substrate
   • Clean surface free of loose material and dust where paving is to be bonded to substrate
3. Lay pavers
   • Position edge boards to set out and specifications
   • Spread sand and aggregate, and compact to specifications
   • Grade paving surface, where drainage is necessary, to fall evenly without ponding to outlets or surface run off system provided
   • Mix mortar for masonry paving to specifications
   • Cut pavers to form edges ensuring fit and minimum wastage of material
   • Lay paving units to designed pattern and required fall
   • Complete edges to specification
   • Complete compaction, mortaring and sweeping work to specifications
   • Maintain finish level across junctions between different levels
4. Clean up
   • Finish paving clean to requirements
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of paver laying including:

accessing, interpreting and applying documentation relevant to the laying pavers

identifying and applying relevant drawings and job specifications to all work activities

identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks

identifying, obtaining, confirming and implementing signage and barriers requirements

selecting and checking for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues and ground conditions

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the laying of pavers that meets all of the required outcomes including:

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones

monitoring hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process

demonstrates completion of laying pavers that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

preparing the location to lay paving and cleaning the surface free of loose material and dust where paving is to be bonded to substrate

laying paving to specification and design pattern with accurate levels

clearing work area and disposing of, recycling or storing materials

monitoring hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process

the laying of pavers (preparation, laying and finishing) which is to include a minimum of three (3) separate jobs and cover a minimum of:

two (2) different paver shapes

two (2) different laying patterns

one (1) with curved edges

one (1) being a large area, and one (1) being in a small restrictive space

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge inlaying pavers through:

accessing, interpreting and applying organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

identifying and managing risks

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues and ground conditions

setting up work activity

site isolation, signage and traffic control

work health and safety

managing waste

selecting and checking for faults, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

carrying out work to drawings and specifications

applying effective paver laying techniques
